Serving the diverse communities near and far since 1978, DTBA has experienced substantial growth from its humble beginnings to more than 350 financial members.

A Brief History

In 1978, the possibility of building a gymnasium in the Doncaster Primary School was discussed with the school and various groups interested in basketball, gymnastics, badminton, and other minor indoor sports.

A ladies’ badminton group was started using some available daytime space at the Thompsons Road Hall (BTYC) Hall, currently known as the Ted Ajani Hall.

The Doncaster Templestowe Recreation Association (DTRA) was formed in late 1983 under the auspices of the Local Council to oversee the use and maintenance of Council community sporting facilities.

The then Program Director (R. Close) commenced work in March 1984 to organise and develop evening badminton in Thompson Road Hall with evening badminton commencing on Monday nights.

The school continued its discussions with DTRA, resulting in the school hall coming under DTRA’s facilities management.

Badminton gain in popularity resulting in 3 evenings a week at the Thompsons Road Hall.

Interest grew and badminton players in and around the Manningham area wanted a play and recreational facility. This strong interest and strength of passion for the game resulted in submissions made to DTRA supporting DTBA to be the local Management Authority.

With the DTRA’s support, preparation work commenced in the handover plans to DTBA and their management procedures. Preliminary discussions took place for the financing of the building. The Council partly financed the building and were given a 40 year lease on the hall.

Construction of the building took place soon after with completion in early 1987.

DTBA was appointed and installed as the Management Group for the new centre, and had been able to provide an uninterrupted badminton facility and service since.

DTRA has since been replaced by MRA (Manningham Recreation Association), a unit of the Manningham City Council.

The Management Committee of DTBA and its entire membership acknowledge the foresight of those who advanced and laid the foundations of who we are today and what we represent to the many who have benefited from the fastest racquet sport in the world.
